There are critical conversations happening today in the documentary community about appropriation. Canadian–Indian filmmaker Anjali Nayar (Gun Runners, Silas) joins us to talk about changing narratives that dominate films coming from the Global South. Nayar will present critical dialogues concerning how to navigate cultural appropriation; the White Saviour Industrial Complex; the need to expand support for films beyond those focusing on social justice; the uses of technology (including Nayar’s own experience with crowdsourcing for her latest film Silas); and the need to bring new and different voices to the table. She will also provide some practical strategies for action.
